AVN Honored by U.S. Department of Energy

background

South Charleston, W.Va., January 20, 2022 – The National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) Energy Data eXchange (EDX) Development and Operations Team has received the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Achievement Award. AVN Corp. (AVN) works closely with NETL on EDX, an online data laboratory built to streamline Department of Energy (DOE) and Fossil Energy Carbon Management (FECM) research.

The Secretary’s Honor Awards, presented by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, recognize individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond to fulfill the DOE’s mission to address energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges. The Honor Award is presented to teams of DOE federal employees and contractors who have accomplished significant achievements over the previous year. Only two teams were recognized with this award this past year.

EDX is the DOE FECM virtual library and data laboratory built to find, connect, curate, use and re-use data to advance fossil energy and environmental R&D. EDX supports the entire life cycle of data by offering secure, private collaborative workspaces for ongoing research projects until they mature and become catalogued, curated, and published.

AVN supported the NETL team with software development, Geographical Information System (GIS) expertise and big data analysis.

“We want to congratulate the entire NETL team on this prestigious award. Our efforts to preserve data and accelerate resource-sharing will have profound implications for future researchers, allowing teams to develop critical energy technologies faster,” said Mark Dehlin, AVN director of Advanced Software Technologies.

AVN employees on the team include Vic Baker, Aaron Barkhurst, Joel Chittum, Catherine Hines, Timothy Jones, Daniel McFarland, Catherine Hines and Joseph Obradovich.

The Honor Award marks another accolade for the already award-winning EDX team. In 2019, R&D Magazine recognized NETL and AVN in their R&D 100 Awards for their Offshore Risk Modeling Suite, a set of eight data-driven computational tools and models for predicting offshore oil spills that included EDX.
