A customer wanted to investigate the use of an alternative raw material for production of one of its major products since the cost difference would have a significant impact. The potential reaction route was broken down to its elementary steps and laboratory studies were carried out to test the feasibility of those steps. The results allowed an assessment of the viability of the proposed route.
