AVN undertook a project to assist a customer who wanted to improve the recovery and purity of a product obtained by solution phase crystallization. The situation was complicated by the presence of two crystalline polymorphs that differed significantly in their ease of separation from the mother liquor. AVN staff carried out a series of batch crystallization tests under a range of conditions to establish a better understanding of the factors involved in forming the preferred polymorph. In collaboration with the customer’s technical team, a procedure was developed that allowed a significant improvement in product recovery, which led to a success by the business.
