A client needed to gather information on the reaction conditions for design of a production scale unit. The reaction involved use of hydrogen cyanide, so a thorough safety review was held before beginning any experimental work. A statistically designed set of experiments was developed and carried out in a laboratory scale unit, including variations of molar ratios, reaction time and temperature. Results were useful in developing the larger scale design.
