A product of interest to a customer was obtainable by hydrolysis of an ester, and a continuous process was needed for scale-up. AVN began by carrying out a series of batch experiments to collect equilibrium and kinetic data on the hydrolysis reaction. A distillation column was then constructed containing a catalyst to promote the hydrolysis reaction. The process was demonstrated in continuous operation and information was gathered for use in design of a larger facility.
