A customer wanted to test several potential catalysts for an endothermic dehydration reaction. A catalyst test unit was designed based on a one-inch tubular reactor containing about 50 mL of catalyst, with the capability of being heated at temperatures up to about 550°C. The unit was equipped for delivery of two liquid feeds and two gas feeds. It was connected to a Siemens PCS-7 process control system to maintain and record the reaction conditions. The system included various ESDs so it could operate unattended. After testing a number of candidates, a catalyst was selected for further evaluation of its performance.
